On National Poetry Day

Spoons on Trays celebrates National Poetry Day with a poem by Phil Barrett (I'm a proud daughter) about a very special spoon that belonged to my great aunt.

---

Aunt Kath’s spoon –
is old and bent as she was
when she passed away.

The silver-plating, wearing –
tarnished and tarnishing –
from wear and use,

where something
more durable, tried and tested,
has remained.

Lovely,
not in the sense
of being new and shiny,

with its whole life in front of it
but reliable,
proven through use,

fit for purpose
where other spoons
had been too small or short,

the handle’s length
and deep dish of the end
ideal for serving casseroles,

taking its place
alongside other things,
passed-down

from one generation
to the next
to help serve-up the meal of life.
